The rearfoot designs control the rearfoot and are recommended for pes planus foot types, feet with medially deviated subtalar joint axes, as well as patients where midfoot devices are not well tolerated.

 

Rearfoot designs will contour the arch until just anterior to the sustentaculum tali and then drop away towards the 1st MPJ. They are not designed to control midfoot.

 

Due to the smaller area of the foot that these designs control (medial calcaneus), they are most commonly prescribed with a rearfoot varus post of between 8 degrees and 35 degrees. They are designed to have the control point medial to the medial subtalar joint axis.

We recommend adding a rearfoot post when selecting a wedge device or a rearfoot cast modification of 10 plus degrees.
